Backing Up Your Email with Explorer
If you are using the new MS Outlook Express or Outlook Express Beta 2 and higher, you can back up your email files and address book using Internet Explorer v4. Use the listed methods to save your email:
Backing up your mail files in Outlook Express: 1. Using Windows Explorer go to the subdirectory of Windows\Application Data\Microsoft \Outlook Express\Mail.
2. In the Mail folder, you will see a group of *.mbx files (if these files are stored on a different path than default, run the Find command to search for them.
3. Copy the *.mbx files such as INBOX.MBX to a floppy disk or another hard drive.
4. Copy each folder desired by selecting the appropriate name with the *.MBX file extension.
Backing up your Address Book: a. Using Explorer, search the subdirectory of Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book.
b. Copy the files there to a floppy diskette or another hard drive. Keeping in mind, if you have to partition the drive or run FDISK.EXE, you will lose identification to the second drive which will probably be a DOS/WIN95 extended partition.
Backing up your mail folders in MS Outlook 97: a. Use MS Outlook 97 and access the File menu command.
b. Select Import and Export.
c. Select your choice of export or import, preferred choice would be (Export to a Personal Folder File, *.PST) Then click on the NEXT button.
d. Select your desired folder(s) to backup or simply select the Personal Folder and click on the block which identifies (Include subfolders). Then click the NEXT button.
e. Notice the default path of BACKUP.PST. Select your desired path or use the default. Then click on the FINISH button.
All folders now will be backed up unless you selected specific folders or used various filters. It is my suggestion to backup all folders to a PST file that can easily be restored if you upgrade MS Outlook or Express.
