Fix Broken File Associations Quickly
If you accidently associate a particular file extension wit the wrong application, you can fix the problem by using Window's Explorer File Types dialog box. However, you will soon discover that Windows Explorer does not let you remove a single extension from a registered file type without deleting the entire entry and starting over again. To speed things up, just follow these steps:
- Select the Start button, Run.
- In the dialog box, type in winfile and hit the Enter key.
- This will execute the Windows 3.x's File Manager. Once the File Manager opens, pull down the File menu and select the Associate...command. Then, in the Files with Extension text box, type the extension that's associated with the wrong application.
- When you perform this step, you will see the errant file association appear in the Associate With text box. To remove the file association, scroll to the top of the list of file types and select (None). Then click OK to completely remove the association from your system.
You can also use the File Manager to create File Associations as well.
Winfile utility is only found in Windows 95 and 98x operating systems. Also keep in mind that File Manger does not support long filenames, so don't use it to create any files just associations.
