Starting The Modem Troubleshooter
If you have modem problems you may want to first run Diagnostics and then run the Modem Troubleshooter (MT) to help solve a problem. Follow these commands to execute the MT:
- Go to the Start button and select Settings, Control Panel, Modems.
- Click the Diagnostics tab and then the Help button. This will launch the MT in an Internet Explorer browser window
(though it's accessed from your hard drive and not the Internet, naturally).
You can also run the Diagnostics to check the modem configuration.
To prevent problems when installing a new modem, be sure to remove the existing modem driver by going to the Start button, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab and locating your modem, then click the Remove button. Once you have deleted the driver, then restart your system before shutting it down and installing the new modem. If you reinstall a new modem into your PC without removing the previous driver, you may end up with a error upon boot up telling you the Country setting is in error. The way to overcome this problem is to startup Windows in the Safe Mode and remove the modem drivers from the Device Manager tab.
